[ARCHIVED] Lane closures on Highway 421 will create detours to recycling center, landfill from January 10 to 14

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC - From January 10-14, closures of the northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 421 will create a detour for residents who normally access New Hanover County Recycling or Household Hazardous Waste (3002 U.S.-421) or the New Hanover County Landfill (5210 U.S.-421) via the northbound lane.

CSX will be performing repairs to a set of railroad tracks that cross over the highway just south of the recycling center that will begin at 7 am on Monday, January 10, and are scheduled to be finished by 5 pm on Friday, January 14. A small section of the highway near those train tracks will be closed to through traffic during that time. View more information from the NCDOT.

To access the New Hanover County Recycling Center, Household Hazardous Waste facility or New Hanover County Landfill, residents that usually take the northbound lane of Highway 421 coming from Wilmington towards Clinton will need to take Interstate 140, getting off at Exit 14 to reach either location.

New Hanover County Recycling is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and the Household Hazardous Waste facility is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 2 pm and 8 am to noon on Saturday. The New Hanover County Landfill is open from 6:30 am to 5 pm. Monday through Friday and 6:30 am to noon on Saturday.

"We know this may be an inconvenience for our community to utilize our services, but thankfully it is only temporary," said Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman. "Our staff will be here to help those who need assistance upon arrival and we look forward to continuing to provide service to our residents."
