Commissioner Meeting Recap for September 5, 2023

In their first September meeting, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners recognized the work of our county’s Senior Resource Center, approved a grant application and considered a rezoning request. Check out the highlights below.

Honoring the work of the Senior Resource Center

Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation in celebration of National Senior Center Month, highlighting the work being done by the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center.

Located off South College Road, the Senior Resource Center is a hub for older adults in the community, providing an array of activities and services, including dental health care, exercise programs, art classes, nutrition and more. Each of these programs is offered at no cost to New Hanover County residents.

Here are some of the highlights the Senior Resource Center achieved last year:

  • Nutrition services provided 237,278 meals to 3,225 older adults.
  • The Life Enrichment Program, which includes social work services, prescription assistance, Medicare Counseling, Family Caregiver support, mental health counseling, and more, served more than 5,000 individuals by connecting them to information, resources and services.
  • AmeriCorps Seniors engaged 650 older adult volunteers who donated 126,800 hours of community service.
  • Over 310 older adults utilized approximately 16,000 transportation trips, allowing them access to critical medical services and other necessities.

Joint application for Justice Assistance Grant approved

Following a public hearing, Commissioners unanimously approved a joint application with the City of Wilmington to apply for grant funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program for 2024.

The application will now be submitted for consideration. If approved, the requested amount of $80,419 would provide funding from the U.S. Department of Justice that will be used by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to purchase three security cameras for use at county parks with the remaining funds being used by the city to purchase a portable X-ray system.

That’s not all …

To close the meeting, Commissioners held a public hearing in consideration of a rezoning request for 7.37 acres of land off Carolina Beach Road that would rezone the site to R-5 Residential, allowing for higher density and 46 attached single-family dwelling units on the site. The request was approved in a 3-2 vote.
