The second September meeting of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners featured an abundance of celebratory moments, including career milestones and a pair of proclamations. All that and more is in the meeting recap highlights below.
Thank you for your service!
As part of the second monthly meeting, the Board of Commissioners took a moment to recognize New Hanover County team members who have reached career milestones, including those retiring from public service.
This month, the county honored two retirees with a combined 53 years of service to the citizens of New Hanover County. Additionally, another seven employees were honored as they reached 5-year service milestones in their respective careers, and welcomed 12 new employees to the county team. Thank you to all those who have and continue to be of service to our community. We are grateful for all that you do.
Proclamations adopted
Commissioners unanimously adopted and recognized two significant cultural events taking place over the coming weeks in New Hanover County.
First was a proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month in New Hanover County. The annual event, which runs September 15-October 15, is a nationwide celebration honoring the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, their history, and culture. Here in New Hanover County, the Office of Diversity and Equity has partnered with Cape Fear Latinos and the City of Wilmington to host the Cape Fear Latino Festival at Live Oak Pavilion on Saturday, September 23. Learn more about this event by clicking here.
Commissioners also adopted a resolution recognizing the NAACP’s 80th annual North Carolina State Conference, to be held at the Wilmington Convention Center from September 28-30. This marks the third time in the last 30 years that New Hanover County has played host to the NAACP state convention.
That’s not all …
As part of the Consent Agenda, the Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution that makes certain items surplus property, allowing them to be sold to the public. Non-profit organizations can review those items starting September 19, while the public will have the opportunity to participate in an online auction for the remaining items starting September 29. For more information, read the notice here.
Commissioners also heard from officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation regarding current and future roadway projects taking place in the community. This includes the Hampstead bypass, which is slated to open to the public later this month, and ongoing research about a replacement to the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. The presentation can be seen here.
Additionally, Commissioners approved filling vacancies on boards or committees that provide valuable guidance regarding important decisions Commissioners consider throughout the county. To learn more about these committees and check available openings, click here.
