NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has recognized New Hanover County for its excellence in budgeting and financial reporting with a pair of awards.
Earlier this year, the GFOA honored the county with a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for fiscal year 2022-2023. The county’s budget team is led by Michelle Daniels, and this award represents the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. This is the 32nd consecutive year that New Hanover County has received this award.
Recently, the GFOA bestowed another accolade on the county with a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence for its annual comprehensive financial report from fiscal year 2021-2022. Martha Wayne leads the county’s financial reporting team. This award celebrates the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, which New Hanover County has now received for 42 consecutive years. An impartial panel judged the county’s report to meet the program’s high standards, including a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story.
“These accolades serve as a testament to New Hanover County’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency,” said Board of Commissioners Chair Bill Rivenbark. "These awards affirm the hard work we're putting into managing taxpayer dollars wisely. It's not just about balanced books; it's about building trust with our community."
The GFOA advances excellence in government finance by providing best practices, professional development, resources, and practical research for more than 21,000 members and the communities they serve.
